The Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) Cartels and Criminal Group is turning to social media and recruitment days to hire around 40 legal professionals.
The CMA, which tackles restrictive cartel activity for the benefit of consumers, expects to increase the size of its Cartels and Criminal Group by more than a third by the end of March 2015.
The group is looking for individuals who have either significant experience in competition or regulatory law and casework, or in complex litigation, or whose experience may be more limited but who would like the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills.
Since the CMA’s launch in April last year, a number of appointments have been made across the Cartels and Criminal Group’s intelligence, investigator, criminal prosecution and disclosure, civil cartel, digital forensics and casework support teams. The appointments included the creation of a team of specialist investigators to carry out large-scale dawn raids and subsequent investigations, as well as the appointment of three directors in the fields of criminal enforcement, intelligence and digital forensics.
A spokesperson for the CMA told Recruiter the Cartels and Criminal Group will hire around 35 to 40 legal professionals, but additional recruitment of investigators and economists should double that figure.
He added following an initial attempt to recruit through the government’s civil service jobs site the CMA has now chosen to launch a Twitter recruitment campaign and organise an open recruitment evening for the first time. The recruitment day will take place on 28 January.
“We’re putting together a very glossy candidate pack,” he added. “We’re going through specialist lawyer forums where they talk to each other and encourage people through there.
“We’re trying to get the word out as widely as we possibly can because we’re aware demand for these sorts of people [competition lawyers] is seriously competitive.”
