IBM has recruited 65 new staff to work on Watson – the firm’s computer system that defeated the champions of the quiz show Jeopardy more than three years ago, according to a report by US broadcaster CNBC.

It was reported that the technology firm, which received almost 4,000 applications, took an unconventional approach to hiring. The Watson machine itself was used to sort through thousands of applications to find the best talent.

Potential candidates then answered a series of questions on video and took part in a series of tasks, such as building exercises and a scavenger hunt.

John Gordon, vice president of IBM’s Watson division, told CNBC: "It's a whole new era. We're looking for creative, smart, open-minded people who can make things work differently.”

Recruiter contacted IBM to find out whether a similar approach would be adopted for the UK but no one was available to comment ahead of press deadlines.
