Australia’s spy watchdog Dr Vivienne Thom has launched a recruitment drive to ensure a raft of new powers granted to the country’s intelligence and securities agencies earlier this month can be carried out.

To strengthen her office’s ability, Dr Thom, the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS), is looking for up to five ongoing, non-ongoing, full-time and part-time staff.

According to the job description on the IGIS website, responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting inspections of the operational activities of the Australian intelligence and security agencies
  • Managing complaints from members of the public and current or former intelligence and security agency employees
  • Undertaking inquiries under the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1986.

The House of Representatives passed amendments to national security legislation on 1 October.

They include giving Australian spies power to monitor the entire Australian internet with just one search warrant.

Salaries on offer range from $70,155 (£38,441) to $133,967.

The recruitment drive closes on 24 October.
