GE pledges 1,000 jobs to boost Alstom deal

General Electric (GE), the US industrial giant, has pledged to create 1,000 new jobs in France if its $16.9bn (£10bn) take over of French group Alstom’s energy business goes ahead.

General Electric (GE), the US industrial giant, has pledged to create 1,000 new jobs in France if its $16.9bn (£10bn) take over of French group Alstom’s energy business goes ahead.

According to a French government official, the promise was made on Tuesday during a discussion between French President Francois Hollande and GE chief executive Jeff Immelt.

"Today (28 May), we can see that GE's offer has been detailed, improved, and strengthened," said the government official.

"We have made progress and look forward to the conclusion of this process in the next few weeks," GE said in a statement.
