Tues, 18 Mar 2014At least 16 people have died in stampedes across four Nigerian cities where the National Immigration Service was conducting aptitude tests to recruit new officers on Saturday (15 March).

Seven people were killed and dozens more injured in a crowd of about 68,000 who registered for the test at the National Stadium in Abuja, the capital, immigration spokesman Emeka Obua said.

Additional deaths were recorded in the oil capital of Port Harcourt, in Minna in the North, and in Benin City in the South.

Nationwide more than 522,000 applicants paid 1,000-naira (£3.60) each to take the test for about 4,500 jobs.

Unemployment is a particular challenge in Nigeria, with an estimated 37.5% of under-25s out of work, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
