Thu, 21 Nov 2013The US Department of Labor (DOL) has established an employment and training programme specifically for women veterans of the country’s armed forces.
While post-military recruitment has become a hot topic on both sides of the Atlantic in recent years – with Recruiter's charity of choice SoldierOn! working in this area – this is the first time the DOL has formally targeted female veterans only.
The Women Veteran Program will increase awareness of American Job Centres and DOL resources, among “underemployed women veterans and those who influence them”.
The DOL will also look to educate employers and the public on the strengths and capabilities of women vets, as well as “expanding traditional perceptions of who a veteran is. Issues facing women vets in the civilian world will be further explored, so as to influence policy and the way services are run".
The programme is led by Dr Nancy A Glowacki, an army veteran who has worked on a variety of veterans’ employment initiatives and has an MBA in HR management. She reports to Veterans Employment and Training Services deputy assistant secretary for policy Teresa W Gerton, also an army veteran.
