Fri, 13 Sep 2013Jobs in the property sector soared to a record high in the second quarter of the year, with one in four new jobs created in the economy property-related.

According to the Office for National statistics, the number of jobs in the sector rose by 77,000 compared with the same quarter last year.

The number of jobs in the sector, which includes estate agents and property developers, rose to 562,000 in the second quarter of the year, exceeding the 2008 peak. According to economists, the jobs growth is being driven by improvements in the housing market.

Glynis Frew, director of property recruiter Hunters Property Group, tells recruiter.co.uk that things have “undoubtedly been busier” in the last 12 months. She says that most new jobs in the sector have been for sales negotiators. However, she says a range of new jobs have come on stream, including valuation management and marketing.

Property was not the only sector to experience growth, however. The number of jobs in human health and social work increased by 117,000 (2.9%), professional scientific and technical by 88,000 (3.5%), while information and communication rose by 68,000 (5.4%).

Several sectors saw a fall in jobs, with agriculture, forestry and fishing, and mining and quarrying seeing declines of 13% and 5.1% respectively.

Finance and insurance fell by 1.9%, although more than 1.1m people still work in the sector. Overall employment increased from 32.15m to 32.48m in the 12 months to June 2013, a rise of 334,000.
