Barclays and British Hospitality Association look to support 60,000 new jobs

The British Hospitality Association (BHA) is working with banking group Barclays to support the industry body’s goal of creating 60,000 new jobs in the sector by 2015.
Fri, 6 Sep 2013The British Hospitality Association (BHA) is working with banking group Barclays to support the industry body’s goal of creating 60,000 new jobs in the sector by 2015.

The two organisations will use their collective power and flagship employability campaigns to help young people get ready for work, and find quality apprenticeships and job opportunities.

Barclays will boost the BHA’s ‘Inspiring the next generation’ campaign through nationwide events to showcase the variety of career paths in the industry, which will also help local employers to find young people keen to start a career with them.

The BHA will join and back Barclay’s LifeSkills programme, which is designed to help equip one million young people with the skills they need to make the transition from education to employment – with BHA member companies listing work experience opportunities through the programme's website.

Barclays will also support BHA members in setting up apprenticeship programmes for themselves using Barclays’ expertise and know-how.

According to the BHA, hospitality is the fourth largest industry in the UK, employing 2.7m people, or 10% of the UK workforce.

Mike Thompson, head of employability at Barclays, adds: “We’ve learned from our own successful apprenticeship programme what a great impact that investing in young people can do for your business.

“Now by partnering with the BHA we hope to take that approach to an industry level and make a really big impact on tackling youth unemployment in the UK.”
