Purchasing talent: Jaguar Land Rover’s ‘fastest-growing’ function keeps hiring

Tue, 20 Aug 2013Auto maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has launched a recruitment campaign to attract experienced professionals to its purchasing team, and is casting its net beyond the automotives industry.

The company has been fast expanding in recent years, with over 9,000 of its roles in a 25,000-strong workforce having been created in the past three years, and a quarter of those announced earlier this year, including in a new £500m engine manufacturing centre.

Ian Harnett, JLR purchasing director, says: “We need experienced and talented buyers and managers, including those who may not have previously considered a career in the automotive industry.”

The firm says it has “in recent years seen a number of purchasing professionals successfully make the switch to the automotive sector from aerospace, retail and construction”.

The new purchasing professionals will support production, non-production and supplier development operations, and take the team to around 700 people. Having more than doubled in size since 2009, the purchasing team is the company’s fastest-expanding.

And with the firm having invested £10bn in the UK supply chain alone in the past two years, the purchasing team has a lot of influence over the significant employment created in supplier firms by JLR’s expansion. Harnett says that as each production buyer is “responsible for an average spend of £50m per annum, we can guarantee new recruits will be empowered to drive Jaguar Land Rover’s future success”.

Would-be applicants are directed to a special section of the Jaguar Land Rover's careers site, with a rather natty graphic that recruiter.co.uk reckons is worth checking out even if you’re not going to apply…
