Mon, 5 Aug 2013Fines totalling £10.8m were handed out to employers of illegal workers in the UK last year, data obtained in a Freedom of Information request by umbrella company giant group has shown.
This is down 10% on the £12m value of all fines issued for 2011, according to another request made by giant group last year.
Last year, giant group found a total of 6,953 Notification of Liability (NOL) notices handed out since a new system was introduced in February 2008, at an average of 1,738 per year, much higher than the 1,270 for 2012.
Currently, the maximum fine for employers taking on illegal staff is £10k, but giant group notes a proposal tabled last month to double this. The average fine in 2012 works out at £8.5k.
According to giant group, it – alongside the other seven professional umbrellas holding membership of the Freelancer & Contractor Services Assocation – carries out right-to-work checks on workers as part of adherence to the association’s code of conduct.
