Wed, 22 May 2013The boss of tech giant Apple has said the company will create jobs in Texas and Illinois with the investment of $100m (£66m) in the production of new Mac computers.

Tim Cook said yesterday in a congressional hearing yesterday (21 May) that the firm’s investment in making new Macs in Texas, with components coming from Illinois, will also see parts coming from other parts of the country including Kentucky and Mississippi.

And Cook also noted that Apple has “created hundreds of thousands of jobs” in the US.

The firm is under pressure from the US Congress and broader media over its corporate tax arrangements, similar to ongoing debate this side of the Atlantic, although in the hearing, Cook said: “To the best of our knowledge, Apple has become the largest corporate income tax payer in America.”

The announcement has been greeted with come cynicism, with US publication Computerworld reporting the news today with the headline ‘Apple to build Macs in low-tax Texas’.

The same congressional hearing also saw former presidential candidate and US Senator John McCain asking Cook: "Why the hell do I have to keep updating my apps on my iPhone all the time and why you don't fix that?" Cook did not respond as the session’s allocated time was up.
