What’s in a name? A recruiter by any other name would smell as sweet...

The appointment of a man with the professionally-unfortunate name of Paul Loss to a senior position in an investment management firm this week got Recruiter thinking…

Baring Asset Management’s appointment of Loss is not the only time we’ve heard of someone’s naming striking a chord with their job function. One member of the Recruiter team remembers having a geography teacher called Mrs Rock, for example.

This week also saw Rich Ricci leave his role as Barclays’ chief executive officer of corporate and investment banking, and one can only imagine that his salary package has been commensurate with his moniker.

A quick search on LinkedIn found over 100 people in the ‘staffing and recruiting’ industry as the social network calls it with the surname Hunt – very apt for a job in search and recruitment. Miles, the chairman at the Association of Professional Staffing Companies, is perhaps the most eminent.

Better still were the results LinkedIn turned up for ‘Jobs’. Arlene Jobs at James Morton Recruitment in London, and a Frank with the same surname over in Southend with jobcertain.co.uk, seem to be our best industry efforts.

And a favourite among our list was Marco Velo – an Italian professional cyclist (vélo being the French word for bicycle, for those not up on the lingo). As far as sports go, the clearest case of names controlling someone’s destiny is surely a former manager of German football team VfL Wolfsburg. Wolf Wolfgang.
