A couple of interesting recruitment nuggets have come to Recruiter’s attention this week – both involving grass one way or another…

First, the story of football fan James McDonagh, a customer services manager who has done a bit of Sunday league coaching in his spare time. He was invited to attend an interview for the vacant managerial job at troubled Blackburn Rovers FC.

A fan of arch rivals Burnley FC, he told the Daily Mail: “I wasn’t expecting to get shortlisted but Blackburn’s owners are known for their barmy decisions.” In his application he also apparently vowed to get the club relegated from the Championship [the second tier in the English football league] for the second time on the trot.

A few days later, and controversy around the recruitment of a new manager at Sunderland was hitting the front pages. Yesterday, a senior sports industry recruitment figure told Recruiter that clubs might do well to get agencies involved in the hiring of their managers.

From the football fields of the North-West we hop on the Eurostar to Paris, where we can only imagine the sort of job interview the city of Paris might have conducted for some new recruits.

Specifically, reports online news service The Local, “four little black sheep left their countryside homes on Wednesday and have begun new careers as ‘park keepers’ in the French capital”.

The sheep are taking on the role of lawnmowers as part of an eco-grazing experiment by Parisian authorities to promote biodiversity, and avoid the use of fuel and chemical weedkillers.

The flock from the island of Ouessant, to the West of Brittany, have a contract through until October. The sheep were (probably) not available for comment.
