Wed, 3 Apr 2013Car giant Volkswagen (VW) will employ an extra 50,000 people by 2018 and is hoping to become the biggest car company in the world.

Most new hires will come outside of Germany, in the BRIC nations in particular, alongside several thousand in Tennessee, the firm’s head of employee works council Bernd Osterloh tells Germany newspaper Handelsblatt in an interview.

The firm currently employs 550,000 people worldwide, with around 250,000 in Germany and a further 160,000 across the rest of Europe.

Last month, the company was voted Germany's most attractive employer, as noted by recruiter.co.uk, and at the end of 2012 agreed a charter under which its temporary workers across the world would be given equal pay to permanent staff.
