London has retained the position as the world’s most competitive financial centre, one it has held for six full years, according to a new report.

The Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI), produced by City think-tank Z/Yen, has placed London on top of every one of its 13 bi-annual tables since the first in March 2007, the outright leader every year apart from in the March 2010 survey, where it was tied with New York.

Z/Yen polls 2,300 finance professionals globally for the report, which lists the following cities as the top 10 financial centres globally:

1. London

2. New York

3. Hong Kong

4. Singapore

5. Zurich

6. Tokyo

7. Geneva

8. Boston

9. Seoul

10. Frankfurt

The top five are unchanged in position year-on-year, while Boston and Frankfurt are new entrants to the top 10, taking the places of Chicago and Toronto.

It also lists 10 financial services centres likely to become more significant according to respondents:

1. Singapore

2. Shanghai

3. Hong Kong

4. Seoul

5. Toronto

6. Sao Paulo

7. Luxembourg

8. Istanbul

9. Beijing

10. Moscow

As the Financial Times notes today, the survey “was conducted before the European parliament succeeded in capping bankers’ bonuses – a move that has sparked questions over its future competitiveness”.
