There is much room for improvement in both the implementation of skills provision and employment services in the UK – and crucially in the integration of the two, according to a new report for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

The Employment, Partnership and Skills paper, available online, was carried out by the Institute for Employment Studies on behalf of BIS and the Department for Work and Pensions.

The report also finds that employer-facing staff at Jobcentres “were being very creative in how they approached employer engagement” especially given reduced staffing levels in their teams.

However, negative publicity around work experience at a national level had sometimes made it difficult for Jobcentres to secure such placements, it also notes.

Recruitment industry can be part of welfare reform discussion

The Department of Work and Pensions has this week unveiled a consultation on proposals to move away from fixed cash benefit system towards tailored support.
