General Motors (GM) is to hire 1,000 high-tech workers to staff a new Information Technology Innovation Center near Atlanta, according to US media reports.

The new jobs follow the company’s commitment as of last year to hire up to 10,000 computer professionals in the next three to five years as it brings more of its technology development back in house. The Georgia facility is one of four such centres GM has in the works.

“Locating this center in Atlanta makes good business sense,” GM quoted its CIO Randy Mott as saying. “We can draw from a deep pool of high-tech expertise through the surrounding colleges, universities and talent residing in the area."

The announcement is further good news on jobs for the US automotive sector.

Following the news, Ford said it would take on 2,200 new workers this year, in areas such as product development and information technology, as it embarks “on its biggest white-collar hiring spree in a decade as it ramps up production”.

In a company statement, Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas, said: “As we expand our product lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles, we need more people in critical areas.”

Ford said it is more than halfway to the 12,000 new US jobs it said it would create as part of its contract with the United Auto Workers.
