With India hit of late by a landmark national debate about how unsafe the country is for women, one recruiter operating in the country tells Recruiter the issue of safety of female employees was already on the agenda.

Earlier this week, five men appeared in court accused of the gang rape of a Delhi student, who died as a result of injuries sustained in the attack. The aftermath of the December attack has prompted major debate and protests across the country.

Speaking for the Global Spotlight on India due to be published in the new edition of the magazine, out next week, Oliver Turnbull, founder of digital recruiter Incite People, which has an office in New Delhi, says that the company is very conscious of the safety and concerns of female staff.

This arises from the fact that workers in the Indian office follow a work day more in line with UK working hours (New Delhi is five hours ahead of London), and there is the tendency for family to play a large part in decisions.

He tells Recruiter: “Sometimes our researchers work our hours in the UK and don’t leave the office their time until 9.30pm or 10pm, and so we have to get them [female workers] a taxi back to their house because otherwise their fathers wouldn’t let them work.”

Turnbull was speaking to Recruiter in December, before the Indian rape scandal escalated to its current level of visibility.

Incite People launched in India in 2010, initially providing support and resourcing functions for the UK operation and began recruiting for local clients in 2012.
