The US Department of Labor has built a database of nearly 3,000 candidates with disabilities, available for use free by private and public sector employers, in collaboration with the Department of Defense’s Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity.
Among the 2013 Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) database, 7.8% are veterans and 54.5% have self-identified as Schedule A eligible, meaning that they may be hired (or later promoted) by federal agencies without opening the job for competition, according to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
The candidates, pre-screened by federal recruiters, come from over 200 colleges and universities, and the programme has seen over 6,500 students obtain federal employment since 1995.
The Department of Labor also notes that while it pre-dated it, the WRP is a “natural support” to President Barack Obama’s Executive Order 13548 ‘Increasing Federal Employment of Individuals with Disabilities’, launched in 2010.

- On Tuesday this week (4 December), the EEOC filed a disability discrimination lawsuit today against staffing agency Staffmark and electronics giant Sony, alleging that they terminated a woman with a prosthetic leg’s contract because of her disability, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
