An agreement that will create job opportunities for Ugandans living in Turkey has been signed by Turkish union HAK-IS and Uganda’s National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU).

This is according to Ugandan newspaper New Vision. NOTU chair Owere Usher Wilson says: “As a result of the world economic troubles, millions of workers are losing jobs at a terrific speed. In the developing countries, Uganda in particular, the informal sector is increasing while the formal sector is shrinking.”

According to Eurostat data, Turkish unemployment levels have dropped from over 13% in mid-2009 to 7.7% in June this year. Uganda has a marginally negative net migration rate of -0.02 per 1,000 population for 2012, ranking it 95th out of 192 countries worldwide by The World Factbook which is produced by the US’ Central Intelligence Agency. Information on the number of Ugandans living in Turkey is not available.
