In response to recent comments about screening and standards, (Recruiter 24 June and 8 July), it’s clear that now, more than ever, it is only through providing a quality screening and matching service can any recruitment company hope to thrive.
Reference checking is therefore imperative and while there is no legal obligation to obtain them, it is really just good recruitment practice. With
this in mind it is equally imperative that all candidates are absolutely honest with their consultant.
If mistakes have been made in the past, just admit them up front. All clients, regardless of industry, are being fastidious in their selection process. Trying to cover up past problems with lies or burying your head in the sand will just not help. Granted it can sometimes be difficult to
obtain official written references, but that’s why good recruiters rely on their contact network and find out the truth.
Virtually all job offers are made pending good references, so even if a candidate manages to bypass the initial checking procedures, when the truth comes out, the job and the fee may be lost.
