Extra qualifications give an “edge”

A postgraduate qualification is “more or less essential” for managers and professionals in 2006, said 58% of recruiters in a survey.

The University of London’s survey was carried out by KRC Research in March. It covered the UK’s Top 50 recruiters of mid-career professionals of FTSE 350 companies.

Those surveyed included Reed Accountancy, Adecco UK, Michael Page, Hays Marketing Personnel and Select Appointments.

The survey found that 64% of recruiters say a postgraduate qualification gives a “competitive edge” but 66% said it was only valuable if it is specifically relevant to a person’s job.

Dr Chris Dewberry of Birkbeck, University of London, said: “The research shows there is recognition that professionals who upgrade and diversify their skills reap rewards in the workplace. But this is not about studying

for studying’s sake. The clear message is that postgraduate qualifications can provide the all-important competitive edge only if they are directly relevant to an individual‘s career and from a reputable provider.”
