The number of people unemployed in the UK has risen to its highest in six years.

For the three months to August, the unemployment tally was 1,702,000, up 45, 000 on the previous quarter.  This takes the unemployment rate up to 5.5%.

The number of people claiming benefits in September rose 10,200 to 962,000, the highest since 2001.
