Tally at highest since 2000
The unemployment rate in the UK rose to 5.6% in the three months to September, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The unemployment level for the period was 1.71m, up 27,000. This is up from 5.5% in the previous quarter.
The claimant count rose to 961,300, or 3%, in October, up 1,200.
The number of vacancies was 602,600, up 600 from the previous quarter.
