Tube strike

Unions call for strike action over the use of agency staff

A tube strike is looming after members of trade union Transport Salaried Staff’s Association voted to walk out over the use of casual staff and closing ticket offices. The union said 80% of staff backed industrial action.

The TSSA is protesting at threats to close 40 ticket offices and the use of private security guards and is also concerned about staff being scheduled to work alone. Both TSSA and the Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT), which shares the security concerns, said talks had faltered last week, claiming London Underground had gone back on promises not to use agency staff at stations.

General secretary Gerry Doherty called for a "sensible agreement" to be reached to avert the walkout.
