Tesco brings long-term unemployed back to work

A Tesco ‘regeneration partnership store’ has opened in Sheffield, getting over 100 long-term unemployed back into work.

The supermarket worked with Jobcentre Plus and Sheffield College to give jobs to local residents aged 16-62, some of whom have never worked.

Speaking at ceremony marking the completion of the new employees’ training, guest David Blunkett MP said: “This is one of those moments in time when the creation of new job opportunities and the provision of training is not only welcome, but vital, for the health and wellbeing of the whole of this part of Sheffield, as well as the individuals able to earn a living and sustain their families.”

Tesco corporate affairs manager, Deborah Hayeems, says: “Through our partnership with Jobcentre Plus and Sheffield College, we have been able to identify people in the local community who have struggled to find work in the past. We have worked with them to ensure they are given the skills and confidence boost they need to get back into employment.”
