Take cultural fit into account for top talent management

Successful talent management is more than simply importing best practice, but needs to take account of the culture of the organisation, according to the deputy head of head of talent and development & resourcing at the Department of Work & Pensions.

Claire Campbell told a Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) conference in London last week that the Civil Service culture presented a number of challenges for talent management.

One challenge was resistance from some managers to identify talent because they might lose them, said Campbell.

Identifying the small number of staff regarded as talented to the rest of the workforce “would be demotivating for the 99%” who were not classed as talented by the organisation, she added.

Other challenges were staff’s reluctance to move to a new area of the business because they were comfortable where they were, or because it involved an additional 20 minutes travel, said Campbell.
