Swinging into action with a smile

Pioneers of the moving assembly line, the Ford Motor Company is still improving its seminal innovation 100 years on.

Pioneers of the moving assembly line, the Ford Motor Company is still improving its seminal innovation 100 years on. With the retirement age creeping ever upwards and an ageing workforce bending and twisting to fit fiddly components into other fiddly bits (as you can see, we’re well versed in the art of motor mechanics on Recruiter…), ergonomic experts at Ford have found a solution. The Happy Seat.

Apparently, this ingenious swivel chair, attached to a rod-shaped suspension, makes a tough job easier for workers. “The ergonomics of the workstation are improved and operators’ discomfort and fatigue are reduced, leading to reduced injuries and illnesses, less absenteeism, and improved quality of the operations,” said Ellis Carey, a senior ergonomist for Ford of Europe.

So Ford employees can now swing into action at work with a smile and a happy back.
