Susan Boyle highlights the dangers in judging a book by its cover

Susan seems to be a very humble woman with old-fashioned values.

Susan seems to be a very humble woman with old-fashioned values. As she walked out on to the Britain’s Got Talent stage, the judges and audiences faces changed, almost ready to mock and definitely expecting her to fail. Susan had not chosen an outfit that you would consider to be up-to-date on the high street, nor had she spent lots of money on a new haircut.

What happened next will no doubt stick in the minds of those in the auditorium or watching it on television for a long time. The backing track started and she sang — it was quite ironic that the song that she sang was about a girl wanting people to accept her for who she was and not what class she was.

This reminded me of something that happened to me when I worked in recruitment. I was working for one of the nationals on a temp desk, registering a candidate. A young man in his late teens then walked in. He was not well-dressed, he was not articulate and lacked in confidence. One of the other consultants spoke to him and within three minutes he was walking out of the door.

After I had finished my registration, I asked my colleague what had happened. He said: “Come on, what money could I make from him?” To cut a long story short, it turned out that his father was a director of a local company that we had been talking to for a while. Needless to say, we never did do any business with that company.

There are a lot of candidates contacting you at the moment and some people do not necessarily have the best skills or look the part, but you never know who they are or where they come from.
