Summer job students could pay too much tax

Students should be wary of paying too much tax on their earnings, according to the managing director of a student employment job board.

Chris Eccles, managing director of Employment 4 Students (E4S), said: “Any student taking a job this summer should be aware that they potentially can pay too much tax, either by an employer putting them on an emergency tax code or by being taxed as if they were working for the whole year rather than just the summer. As it can take quite a while to reclaim any overpaid tax, it is far better to steer clear of the situation. This can be avoided by filling in a simple form - the P38 (S). At E4S, we have gathered together comprehensive information on taxation for students. This information outlines tax basics and how to ensure you are not paying too much tax. We have also explained how to reclaim tax and offer a link to a tax calculator and other helpful advice centres.”
