De Geijter: bridging the language gap

Recruitment software company Actonomy has remodelled its HRM Knowledge Base of job functions, titles, job descriptions, skills, competencies and knowledge areas to make it easier for recruiters to find the right candidate on their CV databases.

Director Filip de Geijter, chief executive of Actonomy, has been studying the search behaviour of recruiters in training sessions and told Recruiter that many rely too heavily on traditional Boolean search techniques that do not deliver accurate results fast enough.

“They are using simple keywords one after the other until they get the right results and they will often use three to four keywords before they get the right quantity of results,” said De Geijter, who also observed that in many cases recruiters are too generic with their approach to keywords, which means they get an unmanageable number of results.

De Geijter explained that Actonomy has remodelled its HRM Knowledge Base so that recruiters can be more specific in their searches. The artificial intelligence built into the software, which it refers to as a Guided Search model, uses an extensive range of words and groups of words associated with job functions, titles, skills, domain or sectors and industries. De Geijter claims that it bridges the gap between the words recruiters use and some of the other words that candidates use in their CVs.

Actonomy has noted a rise in the number of recruiters investing in CV databases and to maximise this spend, there needs to be more emphasis on better matching, said De Geijter: “The CV databases will have to switch to better technology by the time the recession is over as otherwise they will lose the battle with the newly designed systems.”
