Survey shows the face of city traders is changing

Financial recruiter Jonathan Wren says the long-held image of city traders in pinstripes and braces is outdated. Its five-year research project shows today’s typical city worker is more likely to be a graduate with two degrees and is more likely to be a woman.

In 2005, of the Jonathan Wren candidates educated to degree level or beyond, 76% left university with a qualification directly related to finance, an 8% increase since 2001. The number of graduates with postgraduate qualifications increased from 2% to 4%. In contrast, candidates with MBAs fell by 9%.
The survey showed an 18% increase in CVs received from female candidates since 2001. In 2005 women accounted for 47% of city job seekers using the recruiter’s services.

The figures show the number of job applicants from overseas has risen by 32% since 2001. Back then the majority of overseas candidates came from mid-European countries such as France and Germany as well as, Australia and the US. However, in 2006, the city workforce is much more international with a rise in candidates from Poland, Scandinavia and South Asia.
