Ken Loach's film about the mistreatment of migrant workers has met with criticism from a recruiter which recruits staff from the EU.

It's A Free World, which was broadcast on Channel 4 on 24 September, has been described as "far removed from reality" and "out of touch".

James Molloy, group business development manager at Gloucestershire-based Omega Resource Group, told Recruiter: "I think it was simplistic. It was not a very flattering picture of what agencies like ours do to go the extra mile and help their migrant workers."

In the film, a woman set up her own agency recruiting workers from Eastern Europe. Although she starts out as a legitimate operator, she is soon persuaded to take on 'casuals' who do not have the necessary paperwork.

Omega recruits staff for the engineering and technical sectors. Molloy added: "The agency was portrayed as if anybody could do it. If that was the case then every Tom, Dick and Harry would be doing it.

"I don't believe that many organisations would operate like that because they wouldn't want to leave themselves open to that element of risk."

Recruiter attempted to contact Loach to discuss the stance of the film but he was working on other projects.
