Recruitment ads on-air, online — and in demand

Emap Radio's on-air and online recruitment service has notched up 23,000 users in the first 21 days of operation and currently lists more than 1,500 jobs on the key103jobs.co.uk website. Emap is the second biggest commercial radio operator in the country and chose its Manchester-based Key103 station to launch (Recruiter, 16 January).

Jonathan Turpin, Emap Radio's digital director and former chief executive of fish4, told Recruiter that it plans to roll-out the service to its other stations, probably in the second quarter of this year.

Response has been positive from agencies using the service, which include Wilmslow-based Leap 29. Patrick Bell, divisional director, told Recruiter that the quality of response has been good. "The combination of online and on-air advertising gives us immediate access to active and passive jobseekers in Greater Manchester," he said. "It will be part of our recruitment strategy going forward."

Turpin believes that the marriage of radio and the internet is a powerful tool for recruiters to target those they wouldn't otherwise reach, because people listen to radio while they are online, "and radio acts as a trigger for people to go online".

He added: "Radio advertising also has a lower entry point for recruiters. For example, our packages include bundling three employers into a 60-second ad — we can reduce what needs to be said because we only have to give our url as a contact point."

The aforementioned Job of the day Launch Package goes out at peak time (breakfast and drive time), costs £7,000 for a three-month package and is one of nine packages on offer. Others include a weekend package at £3,190 and a rapid hire spot at £1,650, which comprises an intensive two-day weekday radio campaign.

The site, key103jobs.co.uk, also features free job listings and Turpin says that these ads are getting a good response although the paid-for is getting "a substantial additional response". That said, Turpin believes the arrival of free posting is highly significant. "It is one of the biggest changes to come through and will pose a challenge to the traditional players," he said.

Reed.co.uk now offers a free listing, and in the 28 November issue, Recruiter reported on the launch of community site tapthat.co.uk, which also lets employers and agencies post ads for free.
