Recruiters responding to today’s news from the CIPD that 32% of all employers expect to cut jobs during the next three months say they are adding and reinforcing existing services to soften the blows for clients and employees alike.
The CIPD/KPMG quarterly Labour Market Report figures reflect an increase of 3% in the percentage of all employers expecting to make redundancies from the Spring quarter and a total of 6% from the Winter report.
The public sector is expected to suffer greater losses than either the private or voluntary sectors. Of public sector employers, 36% plan to make redundancies furing the next three months. That’s compared to 30% in the private sector and 24% in the voluntary sector.
At public sector specialist Morgan Hunt, director Sarah Bennett told Recruiter, “We can support the concern for the public sector ‘brain drain’, as we have witnessed highly-skilled workers who have contacted us showing uncertainty for their future and have asked about opportunities in the private sector.”
Bennett went on to say, “Since the increase of commercialisation of public sector, we have already placed many candidates from the private sector into the public sector, so those making the return will transition easily. Those without private sector experience could be redeployed when the government tender for private sector companies to deliver frontline services, as they seek more commercial options.”
Mark Staniland, managing director of Hays Career Transition Services, told Recruiter that Hays is stepping up his division’s service offering to accommodate the increasing need among employers and staff alike.
Staniland said, “Not only are we adding to our public sector division with a new team of business development experts, who will be focusing on understanding the needs of employers and devising cost effective solutions but we will also be expanding our career transition services division. Staff will need to be supported through this period of transition, both emotionally and practically with finding a new job.”
