Panchasra: reducing costs shouldn’t be top priority for resourcing departments

Cost cutting is not the be-all and end-all of in-house recruitment, according to the head of resourcing at four of online travel company Expedia Inc’s global brands.

Roopesh Panchasra told Recruiter that a lot of companies set up internal recruiting functions to reduce cost. However, while he recognised cutting costs was “absolutely a driver”, it was not the top of his own agenda.

“For me, it’s about establishing a credible, high quality recruiting team [from which] there is a direct link to quality of hire, to retention, to business goals and ultimately to profitability,” explained Panchasra.

Panchasra outlined a number of pillars on which he believed in-house recruiters could build success:

  • understanding the market thinking big wherever possible
  • building the internal brand within the recruiting team
  • partnering and teamwork
  • leading and motivating

Panchasra, who is global head of resourcing for Expedia Affiliate Network, Hotels.com, Venere and Egencia, said he wouldn’t be interested in working for an organisation that put cost cutting at the top of the resourcing department’s agenda.
