Poundland’s festive jobs may not be just for Christmas

Discount retailer Poundland will begin recruitment immediately for around 2,000 temporary Christmas roles, hinting strongly to applicants that such roles can frequently lead to full-time employment.

A spokesperson for the company tells Recruiter that last year an “almost identical” number of temporary Christmas staff joined the company, with nearly 500 staying on to become permanent employees.

The spokesperson went on to say that Poundland sees temporary work as a good way for employees to see if they like the job before applying for full-time work.

Chief executive Jim McCarthy says the company will take on an average of five or six extra staff in each store.

The company advertises vacancies in Jobcentre Plus and the Shaw Trust, a charity that help people with disabilities into employment and non-departmental government body Remploy.

Poundland employs over 10,000 people across the UK.
