The NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (PASA) has invited agencies to register their interest in bidding for a £187m, three-year contract for the supply of medical locums.
The contract, which can be extended for an additional 12 months, is a renewal of the current framework agreement and covers all grades and specialities of locums except locum GPs throughout England, Wales and Scotland.
Dr Gareth Broberg, the managing director of Fresh Medical Recruitment, said it was "probably the largest contract of its kind for the supply of doctors to the NHS", although he wasn't sure his own agency would go for it.
"It's the bread and butter of big agencies, and not being a big agency I'm not sure if it's attractive to us," he said.
Agencies wishing to register their interest must first ensure their profile on the NHS supplier information database (NHS-sid) is complete and up-to-date.
The next stage is completion of a pre-qualification questionnaire, after which short-listed companies or consortia will be invited to attend a supplier conference. The deadline is noon on Monday 6 August.
