Recruitment policy leads to 20% of Tesco workforce aged over 50

Supermarket giant Tesco’s pro-older people recruitment policy has led to 20% of its workforce being over 50, which equates to more than 54,000 employees.

Linda Avis, personnel manager for UK Resourcing at Tesco, said: “Staff turnover is at its lowest point within the over 50s age bracket, especially the 50–59 year olds, and so we as a company benefit from the loyalty and reliability that this age group provide.”

With no compulsory retirement age, the supermarket chain’s oldest employee is 80.
