Survey reveals teenagers aren’t getting career advice

Around 30% of teenagers in the UK want careers in already oversupplied professions, such as acting and sport, according to a survey of 10 to 19 year olds by careers website b-live.

The research found that 40% of 16-year olds do not know what they want to do or where to get the information and 33% have never visited their school career centre.

It found that 60% of young people had work experience unrelated to their job interest, 87% of secondary schools had placement difficulties and 80% of secondary schools need more placements.

The research found that only 50% of graduates are rated as having good skills entering employment. It found that 65% of employers rated school leavers’ literacy and numeracy skills as fair, 25% rated their communication skills as poor and 41% said their organisation skills were poor.
