The Department for Education and Skills has published new consolidated recruitment guidance for the safe and responsible recruitment of teachers and other staff working in schools and colleges.

Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education makes clear the responsibilities of schools and colleges in safeguarding their pupils and students from adults who may seek employment in these settings with a view to harming children and young people.

Employers will now be able to refer to a single piece of guidance when carrying out the important background and other checks on new members of staff. It clarifies the process for checking volunteer staff, including Governors who come into regular contact with children.
