Readers of The Guardian can now search for a job while on the move by logging on to the WAP job site http://www.guardianjobs.mobi/.
Users can browse jobs and request further information on a position to be emailed to them, most typically to their inbox at home.
The site has been developed for Guardian News & Media by interactive mobile information and entertainment specialist WIN.
Graham Rivers, CEO of WIN, told Recruiter the mobile site is the first it has developed in the recruitment sector for a "serious player".
"It's no coincidence it's The Guardian because of its media angle and because it attracts young and dynamic people," Rivers said. He explained that "mobile sites will appeal to those who, in an idle five minutes think, 'I'll look at the jobs'. It's designed so they can dip in and out of it."
The guardianjobs WAPsite is accessed via a WAP text trigger, which calls the site up on a mobile handset. Job seekers can input criteria to receive jobs from the Guardian jobs.co.uk database. Users can call up greater specification on a job if they wish but Rivers believes it will principally act as a "discovery tool".
Nigel Bicknell, head of commercial development, Guardian Recruitment Solutions, said the group wanted to meet the "increasing demand" for information in the mobile space.
It is predicted that the next two years will see major expansion in the mobile recruitment market. Some agencies already enable candidates to browse jobs while on the move and some offer the facility to apply from a handset.
Earlier this year Harvey Nash became the first agency to launch a service on the iPhone, which attracted more than 10,000 visitors in its first four weeks. Business systems director Rob Grimsey told Recruiter that it has had nearly 3,000 visits in the past month.
