Job forecast

CareerBuilder.co.uk hiring at slower pace expected for the New Year

Hiring will slow down in 2008, according to CareerBuilder.co.uk’s annual job forecast, conducted by Harris Interactive.

The study found that 37% of employers plan to increase their number of full-time, permanent employees this year. This compares to 45% who anticipated increasing full-time permanent headcount in 2007.

The research found that 19% of employers plan to increase their number of part-time employees in 2008, down from 30% who expected to do so last year. It discovered that 13% plan to decrease headcount in 2008, while 51% expect no change and 17% are unsure.

Tony Roy (pictured), managing director of CareerBuilder.co.uk, says: “Looking ahead to 2008, recruitment trends are expected to continue. While analysts point to lower job creation in the New Year, employers are proceeding with caution, anticipating a slower, but still steady hiring environment.”

The research also found that major hiring trends for 2008 would be bigger pay cheques, more flexible work arrangements, increase in screening candidates via the internet and rehiring retirees.
