INTERNATIONAL UAE: Emirates ID compulsory for expat workers

In future UAE visas will only be issued when an ID number and accompany card linked to an individual’s biometric data has been obtained, Emirates247.com reports.

In future UAE visas will only be issued when an ID number and accompany card linked to an individual’s biometric data has been obtained, Emirates247.com reports.

UAE nationals and foreigners alike are to receive unique ID numbers that will not change throughout their lifetime, even for those leaving the country for extended periods and then returning.

A spokesperson for the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) told Emirates 247.com: “The ID number is linked to a person’s biometrics, and just like those are exclusive to a person, the ID number is similarly unique. The physical ID card, on the other hand, is linked to the residency visa and must be reissued whenever a new visa is issued.”

The ID card will be essential for all UAE residents and nationals to access services and work legally, with those failing to keep their card up to date facing a maximum fine of Dh1,000 (£172).
