Post-Gaddafi Libya is on the mend, albeit presenting differing opportunities to migrant workers and recruiters in the country.
While jobsite Oil and Gas Job Search reporting it now has more job vacancies on its site than it did at the same time last year, Gulf News reports that migrant workers evacuated from the country of later are keen to get back to Libya and earn money to pay off their debts to recruitment companies.
According to Gulf News, 37,000 Bangladeshi migrant workers left Libya earlier this year, with most having found work through poorly regulated agencies, which “are often accused of charging excessive fees”.
Kamal Matbar told Gulf News that he had taken out a Bangladeshi Tk300,000 (£2,600) high interest loan to secure his first Libyan contract and says: “I will never be able to pay back my loan in Bangladesh, there’s no decent job for me here.”
A statement from Oil and Gas Job Search also notes that while there had been concerns around the functionality of the country’s banking system, this was resolved within a week in their case.
Duncan Freer, managing director of Oil and Gas Job Search, says: “We hope that in the case of Libya, the return to a functioning oil industry will bring stability and opportunity to locals and expats alike and will help facilitate reconstruction work.”
