Australia’s Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, creating more than 30,000 jobs in the region, reports Queensland’s Sunday Mail.

The AUS$2bn (£1.3bn) boost to the local economy will see particular investment in transport infrastructure, and construction work could begin as early as February on the main Games village.

According to the Mail, the event may bring as many as 60,000 interstate and 60,000 international visitors, on top of 10,000 athletes and officials involved in the event.

The Gold Coast won beat Hambantota, Sri Lanka, to the honour of hosting the Games.
