Getting the buzz

We were getting worried. We hadn’t heard of any animal management training techniques for a while — until we came across this. Apparently, the Co-operative Group has linked the popular traits of bees to the current economic crisis and has come up with the Top 10 lessons we can learn from bees to help survive the crunch (keep an open mind). Aligned with its campaign — Plan Bee — to raise awareness of the decline in the British honeybee population, apparently bees can “help business people or those seeking employment to maximise their output and efficiency and get a leg up on their competitors”. Right, pay attention, here are your top 10 tips:

1. Co-operation: A single hive contains around 40-45,000 bees. In credit crunch times, it is imperative to group together, share our knowledge and learn from one another’s skill sets.
2. Productivity: Bees are renowned for their productivity. Now more than ever, it is crucial to keep your output and quality of work at an all-time high. Now is not the time to be lazy.
3. Assertiveness: The Queen Bee can teach us a few lessons on not being afraid of being dominant. Learn to blow your own whistle; don’t be afraid to contribute and share your opinions.
4. Nourishment: Bee pollination provides nourishment for many. Ensure that you are properly nourished — physically and mentally. (Stick with it…)
5. Fearlessness: Bees are fearless when protecting their hives. Never lose faith in your abilities and remain optimistic; redundancy is often an opportunity for success.
6. Creativity: Honeybees seem to inspire creativity. Now is the time to be creative and think outside of the hive when applying for a new position.
7. Flexibility in travel: A bee makes an average of 1,600 round trips to produce one ounce of honey. If there aren’t jobs available in your area, look at options further afield.
8. Fight when necessary: Bees will fight to the death to protect their hives. Know when to take a stand and fight your corner. Or, know when to let things go and move on.
9. Know your role: Bees are very aware of their individual roles. If you are unsure of your role and expectations to deliver, you will find it hard to excel.
10. Intelligence: Bees survive by learning to forage in fluctuating environments. It is important to remain sharp and be two steps ahead of the game.
