Get hire right first time to avoid tribunals, says Evans
Employers have been urged to get recruitment right first time to avoid costly employment tribunals, by Lee Evans, group recruitment manager at New Look.
Evans comments follow The Daily Telegraph reports that the Prime Minister is set to introduce an “employees charter” allowing companies to dismiss workers in the first two years if employment without the threat of being taken to tribunal rather than the present arrangement where employees can claim unfair dismissal after just one year.
Evans told Recruiter: “This will have wider implications for the shop floor in recruiting sales advisers. They handle a more transient population. At head office, we handle recruitment for people that are in it for the long term.
“We tend not to go down this route because we have a pretty robust recruitment process. We are careful to not get ourselves in that predicament anyway.
“We are always looking to improve the quality of hire. The overall corporate strategy is to hire best talent and best people.
“If we are doing things right and going through the probationary reviews and you have regular catch-ups, this [legislation] should not make much difference.”
