Recruiters given tips on handling candidates who have been made redundant

Job site fish4 has issued tips for recruiters on how best to deal with candidates that have just been made redundant.

·        Prepare yourself for the candidate to be visibly distressed (unless they have taken voluntary redundancy)

·        Be aware of their notice situation – have they been paid to be on “gardening leave” (in which case they are not able to go into employment until that is over)

·        Should the candidate be distressed try and calm them down – the first interview will probably not be such an information-gathering opportunity – you may be just a shoulder to lean on

·        Give the candidate advice on suitable temporary/short-term contracts to help them pay the bills, gain more skills and tide them over until the right job comes up

·        Give advice on suitable training on new packages to make them more employable if needed

·        Assist with their CV writing skills

·        Give interview tips – it may have been a long time since the candidate was interviewed officially

·        If you cannot help them – suggest they go elsewhere. There is nothing worse than someone living on false hopes because you feel sorry for them
