Employees reject career concept_2

Poll finds staff want satisfying work instead

Survey shows employees reject the concept of a career while retaining personal work-based goals, according to a survey by global leadership consultancy BlessingWhite.

It found 60% of employees do not think in terms of a career when considering their next job - instead they look for work they consider satisfying.

It found 84% felt that staying with their current organisation is a valid option if they can try new things and develop their skills, and 59% expect to be working for their current organisation in two years time as long as their development needs are met.

However 57% of employees do not expect their employer to provide a clear career path.

Tom Barry, managing director of BlessingWhite Europe, says: "The challenge for employers is to stop making assumptions about what employees want from work and actually ask them. Then they need to provide clear, accessible opportunities for progression that may include lateral moves across the business, rather than simply vertical promotions."
